Veteran advocacy is the driving force behind Maura’s decision to run for Congress. As a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Army and a Nuclear Medicine Technologist at Atlanta’s VA, Maura is one of the few who actually understands the needs of Veterans. She has seen firsthand the ways in which we fail our service members. From archaic computer systems and broken machinery to infiltrated IVs and dilapidated facilities; as Maura likes to say, she knows where the bodies are buried.

Maura intends to reform support for veterans and leave no stone unturned. As it stands, Congress is the place where bills go to die. Most legislation that would have positive outcomes for veterans has a 0% chance of passing. Bills are sitting there waiting to be discussed, but our current Congress is too focused on false impeachments and refusing bipartisanship, even when it could dramatically improve quality of life for so many. Republicans in Congress continue to strike down legislation that would improve healthcare for service members, ensure that our veterans do not end up homeless and hungry, and prevent suicide after returning home.

Our VA Hospitals are some of the lowest ranked facilities in the nation. If elected, Maura will modernize our hospitals, prevent bureaucracy from getting in the way of urgent healthcare needs, make sure all medical staff are qualified and paid fairly, and improve inadequate hiring systems. Maura also wants to address the fraud, waste and abuse going on in our VAs. Hospitals are overcharging and doctors are ordering unnecessary tests, all of which increases financial and emotional stress on recovering veterans. There is a lack of care towards our service members, and Maura will continue to make an effort to build rapport with patients, understand what they are up against, and fight to make sure our veterans are not left behind.
